Observe a recently unearthed Hellenistic site now under excavation, an ancient sanctuary where prophecies were told and a local handicraft center on this fascinating tour with free time for shopping or independent exploration in Kusadasi. Travel to the classical city of Metropolis, founded between the 3rd and 1st century BC during the Hellenistic period, and abandoned after the 15th-century Turkish conquest. You’ll hear that the city was first studied through archaeological field work in 1972 and has been under excavation since 1989. Journey to Claros, much like Delphi and Didyma an important prophetic center and site of remains of a Temple of Apollo, the only Doric-style temple built in Ionia. You’ll learn of a sacred cave near the temple which holds evidence of early Cybele cults and that games called the Claria were held at Claros every fifth year to honor Apollo . At a local handicraft center, enjoy a carpet-making demonstration and view a variety of handmade rugs while conversing with the townspeople. Revel in time on your own in enthralling Kusadasi, perhaps shopping for contemporary treasures or reflecting on life centuries ago.

This tour includes approximately 1 ½ miles of walking, plus any additional walking at the guest’s discretion during free time. There will be some uneven ground, inclines and several steps to negotiate. The tour is not recommended for guests who utilize a wheelchair or guests with mobility concerns. Guests should watch their step at all times in order to avoid injuries. This tour includes approximately 2 ½ hours travel time by coach. The order of sites viewed or visited may vary. At the end of the tour, guests will be dropped off in town, as the buses are not allowed to return them to the cruise ship terminal parking lot. There will be a short walk from the drop-off point in town back to the Kusadasi Terminal building.
